Seeing Green

I've come to realize that most of my photography, or at least, what I post on my photoblog everyday, mostly consists of flowers and trees. I'm always drawn to the silhouettes left by branches or the way trees twist and turn as they try to find sunlight. I also tend to photograph leaves, especially during the fall when the ground is covered with them. This trend in my photography seems to relate well to my new obsession: living green.

Ever since the channel, Planet Green was created, I've been on a non-stop pursuit to completely change the way I do things. I even bought The Green Book, one of the best-selling books about the new craze. Though all this green talk is driving my family crazy, especially when I nit-pick on the things they do and how much waste they are creating by say, using one whole papertowel instead of half. While it'll be near impossible for me to get my family to make some of the same sacrifices I'm willing to make for the benefit of the planet, a fact I find disheartening, I find great joy in living the green lifestyle. I try to be more considerate of the products I buy, what chemicals are in them, and how much packaging is used. These small changes make me feel as though I'm doing something really significant, even if it just means adding a little less waste to the landfills.

Waste Not, Want Not

A few weeks ago, I took part in a trash competition for an art project in 3D design class. Each team was given a bag of trash (soda cans, lots of paper, cds, twine, and other random recycled products) and had 5 hours to create a sculture related to nature using every single thing that we were given. All I have to say is that 5 hours later I was starved, dirty and tired, but we actually managed to complete the project. Our teams design was a flower bed with all sorts of little creatures. I personally made some origami frogs and butterflies which were my favorite parts.

It might be kind of hard to tell exactly what you're looking at, but that's only because it's a 3D sculpture meant to be seen in real life.

The little ladybug was my own invention, made out of a can the wrapper of a Coca-Cola bottle, and the inside of a floppy disk. The cute bug with green wings was made my a team mate, but that duck tape log was a last minute effort to use all of our materials. We still had a huge stack of newspaper and cardstock, so I realized it would would be cute to make a log for the bug. We also still had a pile of cds and I thought it looked like water underneath the log.

It was fun to do this because I had never been in any kind of art competition before, but I never want to do it again. It makes me tired just thinking about it.

I heart Fairy Tales

I have always loved fairy tales and fantasy stories (especially Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland and Little Red Riding Hood) and have become even more obsessed since I found the wonderful art by Isabella of Isabella's Art. All of her creations are so unique and whimisical and she only uses India Ink (another recent discovery if mine).

I just bought a Borders Classics version of Alice in Wonderland that is meant to look like an older edition. It has a pretty red ribbon to mark your place and everything. While it is not really an authentic old edition, it is really quite beautiful and even has original illustrations.

I do have an old 1911 edition of Peter Pan and another book called The Little Lame Prince that I had never heard of. This version of the book has chapter titles printed in color and color images, but it's a novel; something that you don't really see too often. I suppose that's why I bought it (Ooh, pretty colors!).

My tip of the day: Did you know that Italicized and Underlined words or titles are interchangeable? So really, it's down to personal preference. I personally like italics, I think an underlined title disrupts a paragraph somehow. By the way, I'm an English major and Fine Arts minor so I tend to know more about grammar and punctuation than the average person :)

getting sucked in

I've recently found myself getting sucked into the massive online craft world, including etsy and the tons of amazing craft blogs out there. My own personal mediums of choice when it comes to making anything is paint, fabric, yarn, and more recently, india ink. For my 3D Design class I made a relief sculpture of a van Gogh painting out of cut mat board. What a pain in the butt (and the back and the hands, literally). I won't be doing that again for a while.
